The Building Museum is not part of the Smithsonian and it use to be an office for veteran affairs. It is a beautiful building and I was excited to go and explore it!
The outside of the building is rather unassuming...and then you go inside.
The design of the building is gorgeous. The main hall is often used for presidential balls and parties. It is a huge open space and at the very top there are busts lining the walls.
Most of the exhibits prohibited photography so I don't have many pictures but they were really interesting. They had exhibits about houses and homes which showcased the different styles of houses throughout American history. They also had models of famous houses and buildings. It was really cool.
They had a special play-room for kids to play around and build their own homes. Naturally, my friend and I went in and started creating. They had foam blocks shaped in different pieces. Photography was encouraged in this exhibit so I actually have proof.
This is what I built.
It's supposed to be the Fushimi Inari shrine from Japan.
Not bad...considering the materials I had to work with :)
However, the main attraction at the Museum was the in-house maze that they built for the summer.
Although it was a small maze, it was a lot of fun to get through.
After going through it once, we decided that the mature, responsible thing to do would be to time each other and see how long it would take us to get through the maze on our own.
My best time was 1 min., 5 seconds. Not too bad. My co-racer beat me by a few seconds.
They also had a foam arch that you could build. We eagerly embraced the challenge, and after getting help from three other people, we got it done. It was a challenge because we had to space it just right and the foam pieces would often fall on top of our heads when we were wiggling them into place. It stayed up for about 30 seconds and then tumbled down to the ground.
It was a fun afternoon and I hope to go back really soon.
